The true purpose pf arts education is not necessarily to create more professional dancers or artists. It’s to create more complete human beings who are critical thinkers, who have curious minds, who can lead productive lives”

Philosophy of Teaching Statement

As a teacher, my biggest goal is for my students to constantly learn.  I realize that my students will see me as not only an educator, but a protector and a role model.  All of these responsibilities will show as reflectors of learning in my students.

My classroom will be an environment of growth and improvement.  I believe students learn best when they know they are learning in a safe and comfortable environment.  They should not fear being judged or put down. My students will be motivated to work, so that they can be able to express themselves, feel successful in improving skills, and become more critical thinkers.

Therefore, in my classroom I will make my lessons engaging and relatable.  My students will have choices they have to make on their own.  Their personalities and interests will be reflected in their work.  This is possible in a variety of ways.  One way is to design lessons that include the freedom of choice when designing their artwork.  Another way are projects that are specifically about each student; ex: self- portraits.

I will make it clear, as the authority figure in the classroom that they are safe.  I will stand up for them and lead them onto a wise path.  I will not allow anyone to negatively criticize another student’s art work; rather, I will promote all of the positive qualities and hard work that the student’s work shows.  One of my goals is to have my students look forward to art class.  The class where there are multiple right answers, and where diversity is encouraged.  I will promote this by allowing students to have fun experimenting with materials, as well as having time to let students share and discuss the work they created.

I will know that my students have learned when I can see the progress in their work. This will be done through different forms of assessment. An example is project drafts, finished projects, and closing questions. I want my students to begin to rely less on less on the teacher, and to think more for themselves. I will do this by first providing a guided practice of the lesson, and then allowing independent practice. I will encourage my students to ask their classmates for advice before asking me. I understand that each individual student will have different strengths and weaknesses and I will make clear that it is ok, and that it is not to discourage them from trying and improving.
